Abstrakt | In polygynous mammals, relatively few dominant males sire most offspring and prevent subordinates from breeding. Still, about a quarter of the progeny comes from subordinated males. Therefore, when choosing the reproductive partner, it may be a trade-off for the female to estimate the quality of her mate either according to his dominance or other traits reflecting the male’s quality and/or genetic compatibility. |
