Abstract

The role of colostrum in the newborn calves nutrition was very thoroughly explained to the breeders on this workshop. The imunological composition and other biologically active components in colostrum were explained, and the principles of active and passive imunity by calves. The accent was put on the specification of factors influencing the quality of the colostrum. These factors are: a) lactation order, b) season, c) heat stress, d) time – period between calving and the first milking; period between the birth of the calf and the first colostrum feeding; the time as a factor influencing the physiological developement of the calf – activation of the digestive organs. Very important is also the volume of the colostrum – from the first milking and also used for the first feeding of the calves. The breeders were also acquaint with the problematics of nonsufficient sucking reflex by calves and different manners of feeding with colostrum. Also the problematics of the colostral quality was told over and the effective controling management of the calves colostral feeding (evaluation of the calves serum with refractometers to determine the protein in it, the Brix value and the refraction index of the serum). The research project NAZV QJ1510219 was presented with the possibility of joining to this project and also the web site www.telata-mlezivo.cz.
