Abstract

The interview for TV Zemědělec was focused on the current situation in dairy cattle breeding, the development of milk purchase prices, production costs and the overall profitability of farming. The situation in the milk production sector in our country is affected by developments on the European and global markets. From the beginning of last year, there was a reduction in milk supplies at the largest European and world producers, which further supported the growth of the purchase price of milk also in the Czech Republic. In 2022, the purchase price of milk grew rapidly in the Czech Republic and in the other states of the Union and compared to previous years, reached the highest level on average. Estimates suggest that, on average, the number of dairy cows and thus milk production will decrease in the EU countries in the next 10 years, and one of the reasons may be rapidly rising input prices, i.e. rising costs. The total costs after deducting secondary output for 120 dairy farms for the year 2021 in the Czech Republic were 84 000 CZK per cow and year, i.e. 9.42 CZK per liter of milk sold. In 2022, due to the increase in input prices, the costs of most farms have risen, and growth must be expected in the following years. Differences in costs and prices exist between EU member states. Price and costs were higher in Germany in previous years. In the Czech Republic without subsidies dairy cattle breeding is unprofitable from a long-term perspective, and a positive profit could only be made when all subsidies are taken into account.
