The review article summarizes the knowledge on the incidence of mastitis in dairy cattle. Furthermore, in relation to the increase of antimicrobial resistance, it provides the possibilities of non-antibiotic treatment in the form of phytotherapy, phage therapy, and the use of antimicrobial peptides and enzymes. The last part deals with transgenic plants and animals capable of producing antimicrobial agents.
