Abstract

Nowadays are enormous visible changes in dairy farming, which have the goal of bringing better sustainability in producing milk. Farmers have a restriction on antibiotic use. One of the possible stabilising tools of the dairy cows’ sector is Animal Breeding and the selection of resilience genotypes. Resilience is a new trait in dairy cows. It is the ability of dairy cows to resist short-term disturbing effects or to return to their pre-exposure state after they have subsided. Examples of short-term effects are heat stress, social stress, diseases, or disturbances in feeding. Resilient cows have stable milk yields in spite of exposure to stressors. If a cow has a disturbance in milk yield, she will return back to her previous milk, fat and protein production. This trait can be monitored through deviations in daily milk yields, daily weight and daily activity (step count). Researchers concentrated their attention on the duration and magnitude of the response to perturbance. Two indicators were suggested: the autocorrelation and the natural logarithm of deviations. They construct models of milk curves for this purpose using Wilmink’s lactation curve, quantile-polynomial and non-parametric methods. Resilient genotypes are genetically connected with a lower incidence of udder and claw disorders, better health, reproduction, longevity, higher feed intake and optimal body condition score. Resilience is a low heritable trait. The coefficient of heritability is from 0,06 to 0,01. Discarding low-resilient cows and selecting high-resilient cows has a potentially positive impact on the dairy sector. It can bring higher sustainability, improve herd management and, in the end, support the economics of dairy farming in the Czech Republic.
