Abstract

Survival analysis was used to estimate the risk of culling for parity and stage of lactation in Holstein breed. The data set consisted of 178 044 cows. The model included the time-dependent effects parity, stage of lactation, herd, year x season, herd size, class of milk production within herd and year, effect sire and age at the first calving. The highest risk of culling was found for cows at the beginning lactation and during dry period. The risk of culling decreased with parity. The risk of culling of cows assigned to the lowest milk production class was 2.5 times higher than that of cows assigned to the highest milk production class.
