Abstract

The objective of this study was to compare the effect of two long-term commercial extenders on the quality of boar insemination doses using SCA and flow cytometry. Eleven ejaculates from 7 healthy and fertile AI boars were used for this study. Fresh boar semen was diluted in long-term commercial extenders Androstar plus and Novistar in a semen-dilution ratio of 1+2. Insemination doses (ID) were stored at a 17° C. Sperm viability, acrosome integrity, mitochondrial function, lipid membrane peroxidation, sperm motility (progressive, non-progressive and immotile) and kinetic characteristics were evaluated in ID after 0h, 72h and 168h storage time. According to the results, no significant differences were found in the monitored quality parameters of boar ID between the extenders during the storage time (p>0.05). In conclusion, statistically significant differences between tested long-term extenders were not found in the monitored boar semen quality parameters during storage time. Androstar plus and Novistar long-term extenders maintained the high quality of insemination doses for up to 168 hours of storage.
