Abstract

Chitosan significantly decreased serum and hepatic cholesterol in cholesterol-fed (10 g/kg diet) rats. No cholesterol-lowering effect of DEAE-cellulose was observed. Neither cholesterol supplementation nor aminated polysaccharides influenced activity of HMG-CoA reductase, which is the rate-limiting enzyme of cholesterol synthesis.
