The Health Index (HI) was constructed for routine selection of the local Holstein cattle population using the breeding values and economic weights of direct health traits related to resistance to udder and claw diseases. The current breeding objectives of the breed and the currently valid overall selection index of the breed were respected in the HI construction. The HI takes into account the need for direct breeding to improve the health and resistance of Holstein cattle while maintaining the desired selection progress for the current breeding objectivesof the breed.
