Abstract | The aim of the study was to assess the correct breeding practice in milking cattle breeds and to determine the most frequent reserves for rearing calves from birth to weaning. Forty farms for milking cattle in Central Moravia and Bohemia were audited in search of reserves in milking cattle breeds. A set of indicators for the assessment of good breeding practices and preventive measures was set up and analysed, aiming at finding reserves for rearing calves during milk nutrition period. The individual indicators and the overall assessment of good breeding practice were evaluated by a three-step scale (low, medium and high). The largest proportion of farms (60%) reached the middle level of proper breeding practices in calf rearing during dairy nutrition. A high level of good breeding practice was found in 32% of farms and only 8% of analysed farms had a low level of good breeding practice. |
