Abstract

The aim of this study was to verify the possibility of using yellow lupine (Salut variety) as a source of forage for silage formation. For comparison, we used traditional legumes grown for this purpose in the conditions of the Czech Republic, namely field peas (Gambit variety) and common beans (Merkur variety). During the growing season, forage was taken from each crop in the stages of growth: 1) Full flowering, 2) End of flowering, 3) Filling of seeds and 4) Full seeds – wax ripeness. To assess the quantitative parameters, the yield of dry matter and crude protein was monitored. The quality parameters were evaluated on the basis of chemical composition, including in particular the content of dry matter, crude protein, ether extract, fiber fractions, as well as the digestibility of dry matter. Based on the results of this study, it is possible to conclude that lupine had a lower dry matter yield, a higher content of NDF and at the same time a lower digestibility of dry matter compared to peas and beans. For the purpose of ensiling, we recommend harvesting at the seed filling stage, although for peas it is possible to extend the harvest up to wax ripeness without loss of nutrients and digestibility, which we do not recommend for beans and lupines.
