Optimization of the Czech pig breeding program with special regard to reproduction and functional traits

Description

The first objective of the project is to calculate the genetic connectedness between the herds of dam and sire pig breeds on the basis of a thorough data analysis, to determine the effect of connectedness on the predicted breeding values and to propose measures for improving the connectedness among herds. The second objective is to define and select reproduction and a functional traits which are worth to be included in genetic evaluation. Further, factors important for these traits will be identified. Genetic parameters for all traits and combinations of traits will be calculated. A complete methodology for breeding value estimation for the complex of production, reproduction and functional traits will be worked out. The third objective is to design, develop and apply software for the calculation of economic weights for all considered traits on the basis of a complex bio-economic model. The fourth objective is to design selection indices based on the previously calculated economic weights and genetic parameters and ensuring a high competitiveness of the Czech pig industry.
