Abstract

The aim of the paper was to determine the effect of reducing the housing area of the group hutch on the growth and health of calf-bulls during the milk feeding period. Monitoring was carried out in one farm with 36 calf-bulls placed immediately after birth in individual outdoor hutches. At the age of 31 days, 16 calf-bulls were moved into group hutches of four with a housing area of 2.9 m2 per calf (control group), and 20 calf-bulls of five with a housing area of 2.3 m2 per calf (experimental group). Nutrition, water intake and bedding were the same for all calf-bulls. Observed qualitative (individual elements of behaviour, occurrence of diarrhoeal and respiratory diseases) and quantitative parameters (live weight, weight gain, starter intake, first occurrence of disease, duration of disease, number of episodes of diarrhoeal diseases) were evaluated in the TIBCO Statistics. The results show that the calf-bulls housed in a group shed of five had an insignificantly lower live weight at weaning in the 60th day (by -2.2 kg), a lower weight gain (by -0.6 kg) and significantly (p < 0,01) lower of starter intake (by -14.4 kg) in 60 days of rearing compared to calf-bulls housed by four. The frequency of occurrence of diarrhoeal diseases was the same in both groups. The frequency of occurrence of respiratory diseases was insignificantly higher (+10.0%) in calf-bulls housed in an outdoor group hutch of five.
