Abstract

Hemp seed and flaxseed are a source of valuable substances, such as n-3 fatty acids or vitamin E, which increase the quality of the products, but also influence the health of the animals. In the Institute of Animal Science, a number of experiments testing different levels and proportions of these seeds in diets for laying hens and broiler chickens were carried out. The results of the experiments show an increase in bone strength in laying hens and chickens after the administration of hemp seed. This finding may mitigate the risk of fractures in laying hens associated with changing the housing system from enriched cages to floor systems. In the case of feeding both seeds at the same time, a combination of 40 g/kg of hemp and 60 g/kg of linseed in the feed mixture for both hens and chickens is ideal, which will ensure improved performance and quality of meat, eggs and bones. This beneficial effect can be attributed to the higher activity of enzymes in the digestive tract of poultry after the administration of such a mixed feed, which will ensure higher digestibility and utilization of nutrients.
