Abstract | Adherence to the hygiene of the breeding environment is one of the basic preventive measures during calf rearing. In the continuous rearing systems, the use of disinfectants is limited by the presence of calves. At the same time, the effectiveness of preventive disinfection is reduced. The aim of this work is to determine the effect of the use of powder disinfectant on production indicators and health of calves. On one farm, live weight and health were monitored in 80 Holstein calves housed under a shelter with continuous operation. A control group of 40 calves was housed in pens, which were only mechanically cleaned before housing. While the experimental group of another 40 calves were housed in pens which, in accordance with the producer´s recommendations, were treated with powder disinfectant (mixture of copper and iron salts, phosphates and inorganically bound chlorine) in addition to mechanical cleaning after drying. Calves reared in pens treated with powder disinfectant achieved non-significantly higher live weight at weaning (by +1.5 kg) and weight gain during the rearing period (by +1.2 kg). At the same time, the use of a disinfectant during calf rearing led to a significant reduction. |
