Abstract | The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of environment enrichment on the behaviour, growth and health of pair-housed calves. Monitoring was performed in 28 Holstein calves. Seven pairs of calves were housed in pens enriched with a rubber bite cross suspended from a chain on the structure of the pen (experimental group) and 14 pairs of calves in pens not enriched (control group). Calves housed in an environment enrichment achieved significantly higher growth due to significantly higher starter consumption than calves housed in a non-enriched environment. Environment enrichment significantly stimulates the play behaviour of calves, reduces the frequency of occurrence of negative behaviour and thus provides better conditions for their well-being. |
